HOUSTON, Texas –
The architectural team that helped create Explore Houston,
the new visitors information center at the George R.
Brown Convention Center, has been recognized by its
peers for design excellence in the project.
Houston-based Morris Architects received
an honorable mention award for retail space design work
from the Texas/Oklahoma chapter of the International
Interior Design Association.
“This is a great honor in that 58
projects were submitted from Texas and Oklahoma and
only nine were selected for awards,” said Edward
A. Dumont, project manager for Morris Architects.
Explore Houston occupies 3,000 square
feet on the second level of the convention center. It
was opened in June 2004 as a full-service visitors and
information center where conventioneers can access airline
flight information, make lunch and dinner reservations
for restaurants throughout Houston, and purchase merchandise
and souvenirs. Explore Houston showcases local artists
in fields of photography, sculpture, music, painting
and more.
“This is very gratifying award to
receive third-party recognition for a project that we
are all very proud of,” said Dawn Ullrich, director
of the George R. Brown Convention Center. “Our
staff, led by Russ Clark, worked very closely with Morris
Architects to develop a visitors center that is both
functional and beautiful. We hope future convention-goers
will make a point to visit Explore Houston.”
The George R. Brown Convention Center
is one of the largest centers in the nation, offering
more than 1 million square feet of exhibition, meeting
and registration space from its location in downtown
Houston.
