Expansion on schedule as GRBCC prepares
to host Super Bowl Media Center
HOUSTON, Texas (November 24, 2002)
- Construction crews at the George R. Brown Convention
Center are midway through the third quarter as they
push toward completion in November 2003 - two months
before Houston plays host to Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Expansion work at Houston's premier meeting
place broke ground on July 28, 2001. When the $165 million
project is complete, the George R. Brown Convention
Center will feature more than 1 million square feet
of exhibition and meeting space. In addition, a 1,200-room
hotel is being built across the street and will adjoin
the convention center with a double-deck pedestrian
skybridge.
Both projects will be completed before
3,000 members of the international media contingent
converge on the George R. Brown, site of the Super Bowl
Media Center. Across the street, the NFL will convert
the Hilton Americas hotel into its base of operations
for the week of January 25-February 2, 2004.
"Playing host to a global media is
going to be an exciting challenge," said Dawn Ullrich,
director of the George R. Brown Convention Center. "We
got a small taste of it when we hosted the expansion
draft for the Texans last February. We're here to assist
the NFL and the media in any way we can."
Structural steel work is nearly complete
on the south end of the building and well under way
on the north end. When steel is in place, the metal
panels that form the building "skin" are expected
to be installed starting in December. The building is
expected to be fully enclosed by July.
